Oh yes, it’s totally time for the highly requested blue smoothie recipe! It’s not only beautiful and tasty but also very good for you. So what do you need to make this awesome smoothie bowl? Blue spirulina!

 

What are the benefits of blue spirulina?

  • antioxidants which protect our bodies’ cells and contribute to our immune systems functioning properly

  • protein (almost 60g per 100g) that’s easily used by the body

  • iron – spirulina is its best plant-based source and in a highly absorbable form

  • calcium – important for your bones and muscles; and spirulina contains much more of it than milk does!

  • vitamin B1 which helps with good energy levels

  • and it’s just as good for you as the regular green spirulina but without the seaweed taste!

Blue smoothie recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 banana

  • 1 cup of frozen mango

  • (optional) cauliflower

  • (optional) handful of blueberries

  • (optional) plant-based protein powder (try Vega or Sunwarrior*)

  • 1-2 tsp(s) of blue spirulina powder (I use the one by Rawnice)

 

Preparation:

Blend all of the above ingredients together. A part of making a blue smoothie is also playing with colors so feel free to adjust the amount of blue spirulina or bananas/mangos that you use. As the spirulina powder itself is a dark and intense blue, mixing it with (pale) yellow fruit will result in a nice turquoise, almost green shade. I find that adding just a few blueberries makes the shade a bit more blue rather than green. But go ahead and have fun with the process!

Also, cauliflower (cooked or frozen) can make the smoothie more creamy but it should be totally fine with just the bananas and frozen fruit as well. It’s also a great way to sneak in some veggies into your breakfast. Up to you!

 

Toppings:

Use your favorite things! I went for granola (try Eat Natural or Rude Health), nut butter and coconut flakes. But, most importantly, make sure to  e n j o y !
